step by step

Method

  1. Heat the water and melt the butter

    • Heat the water in a saucepan or in the microwave.
    • Add the butter cut into small cubes so it melts easily.
    • Set aside and let the mixture cool off.
    Step 1
  2. Mix the flour and salt

    • Add the flour to a bowl.
    • Add the salt and give it a little mix.
    Step 2
  3. Combine the butter mixture with the flour

    • Slowly start adding the cooled butter mixture to the flour.
    • Mix with a spatula, then use your hand to mix it better.
    Step 3
  4. Add the hot water and knead

    • Slowly add the hot water, being careful as the dough is very sticky at first.
    • Knead until the dough is nice and soft and no longer sticky.
    Step 4
  5. Rest the dough

    • Cover the dough with a towel.
    Step 5
  6. Shape the dough balls

    • Add some flour to the bottom of a container.
    • Squeeze the dough with your hand to make small round balls, about 9 pieces.
    • Try your best to make them about the same size; they don't have to be perfect.
    Step 6
  7. Rest the balls

    • Cover the balls with a towel for 20 minutes to prevent them from drying up.
    Step 7
  8. Roll out the tortillas

    • Lightly flour your rolling pin and the area you're going to be rolling them in.
    • Roll, flip, roll, flip until you get the desired shape, round and about 8 inches if possible.
    Step 8
  9. Cook the tortillas

    • Add a tortilla to a pan or comal.
    • Cook for 14 seconds, then flip and cook for another 40 seconds.
    • Flip one more time and cook for 10 seconds; bubbles mean you did a great job.
    • Transfer them to a towel, or enjoy them straight out of the comal with some butter and salt.
