Method

  1. Preheat the oven

    • Preheat the oven to 375°F at least 1 hour before baking.
    Step 1
  2. Mix the dough

    • Add the flour, brown sugar, yeast and salt to a bowl.
    • Add the warm milk and honey and mix until combined.
    Step 2
  3. Knead in the butter

    • Once a dough ball forms, knead with a stand mixer or by hand.
    • Slowly add the soft butter, one tablespoon at a time, and keep kneading.
    • If kneading by hand, knead 2 minutes then rest 2 minutes, repeating 3 to 4 times.
    • Add a little flour if the dough is too sticky; it should be smooth and elastic.
    Step 3
  4. First rise

    • Lightly oil the dough, cover with plastic wrap or a lid and rest in a warm place until doubled in size.
    Step 4
  5. Shape the loaf

    • Punch down the dough and turn it out onto a lightly floured surface.
    • Roll it into a rectangle about 9 inches long and 4 inches wide.
    • Starting from the 4-inch side, tightly roll the dough into a log and pinch the seams.
    Step 5
  6. Second rise

    • Grease a loaf pan with softened butter and place the dough inside.
    • Cover with a damp clean cotton towel and let rise until doubled again.
    Step 6
  7. Bake

    • Bake uncovered until the loaf is golden brown.
    Step 7
  8. Cool and finish

    • Let the bread cool for 5 minutes, then turn it out onto a wire rack to cool completely.
    • Brush the top with melted butter, then slice and enjoy.
    Step 8
