step by step

Method

  1. Cook the rice

    • Cook the rice until tender and fluffy.
    Step 1
  2. Marinate the beef

    • Mince the garlic and chop the beef into 1-inch chunks.
    • In a bowl, mix the beef with the olive oil, oyster sauce, soy sauce, garlic, sugar and black pepper.
    • Let marinate for 30 min or overnight.
    Step 2
  3. Prep the vegetables

    • Chop the bell peppers and onion into big pieces and set aside.
    Step 3
  4. Sear the beef and vegetables

    • Oil a large pan over high heat and sear the marinated beef until it crusts up, shaking and tossing it in the pan.
    • Remove the beef, add the vegetables and cook until the edges start to char.
    • Return the beef to the pan, toss with the butter, then turn off the heat and set aside.
    Step 4
  5. Make the sauce

    • In a saucepan, combine the hoisin sauce, peanut butter and water.
    • Heat over medium until it thickens and combines, then set aside.
    Step 5
  6. Prepare the nori and beef

    • Cut the nori sheets into halves.
    • Slice the steak against the grain into tender, pull-apart pieces.
    Step 6
  7. Assemble the musubi

    • Fill two thirds of the musubi mold with cooked rice.
    • Press the mold down all the way, then release the outside mold while pressing down so the rice shape pops out.
    • Top with the shaking beef, vegetables and sauce.
    • Wrap with a nori sheet, shiny side outside and rough side inside.
    Step 7
  8. Serve

    • Enjoy the musubi right away.
